Seeds

http://maryturck.wordpress.com/2015/01/06/seed-dreams-in-the-dead-of-winter/

From my big sis

I am hoping to sponsor a neighborhood garden this summer and will teach them how to harvest seeds from heirloom varieties. We will also be doing a cooking show webcast to help people learn what they can do with their produce including food preservstion. We were in Germany a few years ago and learned about solar dehydrators and want to try to build one this spring as well as a smoker made of stones like my mom had growing up on her family farm just south of Cold Spring, Minnesota.
I too, have been dreaming of planting season and getting excited about teaching people how to grow their own food and all the benefits that go along with it.
Watch for upcoming webcast and archived webcasts at:

HARVEST SEASON–Tangible Results, Preparation for Life, The BIG Ripple Effect, Pride & Ownership, and Social Inclusion/Belonging

2014 HARVEST COLLAGE

2014 HARVEST COLLAGE

HARVEST SEASON IS HERE!!! Yesterday DIRT GROUP participants felt great PRIDE & OWNERSHIP as they harvested some TANGIBLE RESULTS from learning, practicing, and mastering important social skills this past growing season! Kids were enjoying eating fresh tomatoes and green beans right out of the garden yesterday as well and have enjoyed sharing these TANGIBLE RESULTS with their families over the course of the summer (BIG RIPPLE EFFECT). Participation in DIRT GROUP provided them an opportunity for hands on learning (Experiential Learning Theory) and by observing their peers and therapists (Social Learning Theory). This rich, experiential skills training opportunity (Symbolic Interactionism) helped them increase their social competencies (PREPARATION FOR LIFE, TANGIBLE RESULTS) and also fostered an opportunity for SOCIAL INCLUSION/BELONGING…fitting in, being part of something bigger than themselves!!! (DIRT GROUP, How participation in experiential gardening groups influences social skill development in at-risk youth. Turck, 2012)

…Growing to Learn…Learning to Grow…

Greetings! Here are some “tangible results” of our efforts in the gardens together so far this season as well as a bunch of pictures of my chickens and turkeys which also contribute to the overall therapeutic milieu at our experiential skills training site on the farm!

A couple of weekends ago I had the opportunity to visit Wise Acre Eatery (serving 90% of their menu items from the farm depending during the growing season and 75% when not in season) in south Minneapolis as well as their garden nursery right across the street, (Tangletown Gardens) on Saturday. Then on Sunday I toured their farm near Plato, MN–Tangletown Farm–what an amazing business!!! All three of these businesses are owned by 2 guys that went to the University of Minnesota and studied Horticulture. THESE GUYS KNOW THEIR STUFF!!! The restaurant has rec’d RAVE reviews and I can tell you I agree with the reviews! I will include pictures in an upcoming blog from my visit that weekend!
